It is with great joy that we would like to announce that the OSSEC project has been acquired by Third Brigade.

The project remains open source, with additional resources and increased support availability to the OSSEC user community.

Quote from the Press release:

Ottawa, ON and Reston, VA – June 16, 2008 – Third Brigade (www.thirdbrigade.com), a security software company specializing in host intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), today announced that it has acquired OSSEC, a leading open source, host-based intrusion detection system, and that Daniel Cid, creator and primary developer for OSSEC, has joined the Third Brigade team as Principal Researcher, OSSEC Development. Third Brigade will continue to contribute to the open source community with new releases of OSSEC, and will extend commercial support and training to the OSSEC open source community.

Thanks!

It seems to be a trend. First Nessus then OSSEC. Because Open Source Projects are well done and stable nowadays it’s finacial vialble to invest in those applications and sell them as services, in appliances and even for the same way that they have been used today. For me it’s a score for OSSEC but an own-goal to Open Source Community.
